An Emergent Origin or Semiotic Functionality: Symmetry, Objective Relational Levels, and Inference of Novel Logical Categories in a Connectionist System

One simple type of connectionist system, the Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM), produces patterns of dynamical output with three important structural properties and capabilities: symmetry, objective relational levels, and the automatic inference of novel logical categories. Together, these emergent properties also reveal a connectionist system that, when cast in the role of a learning agent, has the power to experiment with and discern relevant from trivial information in the environment. This functional form of autonomy also demonstrates that Connectionism can meet at least some of the criteria for creating a truly autonomy system. This “FCM process” also opens the way for a variety of interesting and powerful applications.
